Maintain a Car When you have children you need to take to school, and a job you need to drive to then your car becomes one of your most important investments. Just be sure to remember to replace the rubber parts regularly, and maintain the fluid levels. Replace the rubber parts regularly. There are three main parts that you should keep your eye on – windshield wipers, accessory belts, and tires. The approximate replacement time for your windshield wipers is every 6 months minimum and 1 year maximum. This is one of the most important parts of your car because it affects how well you can see your surroundings. Look out for visible signs of wear on your accessory belts, such as cracking, misalignment, or glazing. And last, but certainly not least, is the tire – maintaining your tires will not only save you future headaches, but money as well. Make sure the tread is intact and that they’re rotated as often as you change your oil. Maintain all fluid levels. The main fluids to keep in mind are oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. If possible, it is best to check these at least once a week. If you have a mechanic that you trust, ask them to show you how to check each of these safely and effectively. As for oil, stick to the rule of thumb – it’s best to have the oil changed every 3,000 to 3,500 miles. When you check your oil regularly you can guard whether or not you can go past this limit, especially if you have only been driving streets rather than freeways. Cars experience natural wear and tear over time, but these are things you can do yourself to make sure your car lasts as long as possible
