New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles has taken the wraps off a new website.
The improved site is designed as a one-stop resource for a wide range of DMV interactions – restructured to allow 24/7 access to information. This redesign follows the state’s efforts to make government more efficient and responsive.
Through the new website, users are able to:
• Renew registration on mobile devices
• Make online reservations for DMV visits
• Sign up for mobile alert reminders on registration and vehicle inspection deadlines
Drivers should be aware before they are allowed to register their car in the state of New York, they need to have proof of car insurance. More on this later.
Here are additional online things you can do on the new website:
Driver License & Learner Permit
• Check the status of your new license
• Update your address
• Monitor your teen’s driving record
• Order replacement driver licenses or permits
• Check license or permit mailing status
• Check driving privilege status
• Driver’s Manual & practice tests
• Schedule & take a road test
• Renew license
• Restore license after revocation

Okay, you get it. You can take care of DMV business online. But are you in compliance with liability requirements? Be aware that New York follows a “no fault” system – basically, if you are involved in an accident, your insurance company will pay for any damages to you, regardless of who is at fault.
State minimums for liability insurance in New York:
• $50,000 for basic no-fault insurance
• $25,000 per person / 50,000 per accident for injury
• $50,000 per person / 100,000 per accident for death
• $10,000 for property damage caused by any one accident
• $25,000 per person / 50,000 per accident for uninsured/underinsured motorist liability
Penalties For Driving Without Insurance In New York
If your coverage ends at any time for any reason, your insurance provider is required by law to notify the state (in fact, the state will monitor your coverage electronically through your insurance company).
The New York Vehicle and Traffic Code states:
• When any car insurance policy is canceled or terminated, that driver needs to surrender his vehicle registration and license plates.
• If you fail to turn in your registration and plates, your registration and driver’s license will be suspended.
• If you are caught operating an uninsured automobile or if you allow another person to drive your uninsured automobile, your license will be revoked for at least one year.
• Driving without insurance carries a civil penalty of $150 to $1500 (depending on the severity) and/or jail time of up to 15 days
The bottom line – save yourself from future problems – make sure you’ve got the proper car insurance coverage in place before you take care of DMV business online.
