Every child absorbs and learns information in different ways, and this stands true for their study habits as well. Some children may take a little longer to memorize information than others, but the reason could be from their study methods. Here are five different ways to study that you can share with your children – find one that they enjoy the most and studying will quickly change from a chore to a joy. Use metaphors – Using metaphors is another wonderful way to organize the information. Finding relationships between bits of information and forming simple ways to bridge them helps the information sink in more than the normal repetition. Engage all the senses – Ideas that are abstract are often the most difficult to memorize because we can’t them to our own lives. If you can come up with images, songs, or even dance moves that remind you of the information, then you can recall these memories when you’re taking the test. Look for patterns – A little organization never hurts, especially if it’s to sort out patterns that are alike within the varying topics. The more you are able to recognize patterns within the information then the more it will sink in. Teach what you learn – One of the best indicators of whether or not you have been able to learn something is revealed in your ability to teach it to someone else. Once you feel comfortable with the material find someone who doesn’t understand much of the topic and try and teach them what you know- this forces you to organize your thoughts and connect concepts to reinforce the material. Don’t cram – It may be tempting to cram all the information in your brain right before the test, but studies have shown that forcing information in a rushed manner is inefficient. The best route is to go back over the bullet points that you are already acquainted with and recap.
